Al Attar Mosque
Description
Built by one of the richer perfumers of the city, who added as well a hammam and a School. Located near the Egyptian Khan, it has an outside portico with a beautiful ornamentation and some Byzantine remains. It has 3 doors. The architect Abi Bakr was famous in his time, having built the Al Kalb river bridge. The new excavation confirmed the existence of a crusader church, the marble dome was a baptistery fountain, as well as the ceiling. A mosaic and an ornamentation have been removed and they are remains from the Byzantine time. This mosque has a very old gate designed by the master Abou Bakr Ibn Bassis, which name is engraved on the top. Another gate was made by Mohamad Son of Ibrahim, recalls the gate of the kortawiya School. It has a niche with Squinches and an ornamentation with colored marble. The Minbar is of marble and is typical Mamluk, so is the vault of the minbar. The minaret is one of the most beautiful Mamluk style, it looks like a high tower of 3 floors. Here another example of mixing crusader remains with Mamluk design.
