Al Burtassi Mosque
Description
This unique minaret standing on a void Portico without a solid base, saved this mosque from demolition as decided after the flood of 1955. The Mefti of Tripoli made a sit-in inside the mosque to confront its destruction following the flood.
Located directly on the riverside, its name came from its owners who wanted it to be a School for the Shafei Students ( a category of the Sunni). A large part of the surrounding buildings have been removed unfortunately among them the Hospital ( Bimaristan), the Patrirchal School.
On the portico, the name of Mohamad is written in Kufi 4 times as well as well the name of Ali, these 2 squarish calligraphy are related together by a calligraphy strip. The squinches and the colored marble stones constitute the entrance gate ornamentation.
