AL KHATUNIYA
Description
Khatun means the Lady during the Mamluk era. She built it with her husband, a Mamlouk prince. The Lady wanted to be buried in the School. Nowadays, it is deserted.
The remaining madrasas have been either demolished after the flood of 1958, or are deserted, some of them have been turned to small Masjed (mosque).
Some other Madrasah concern the Sufis & Derwishes religious brotherhoods who innovated new rituals to reach the signs of the Unique God, and to unite with God. The different orders were centered on performances through music and dance or other skills, based on the spirituality of Islam and the other religion spiritual ways.
These places reserved to the Soufi brotherhoods are often called Takaya or Zawaya. The political power encouraged them as long as they don’t get involved in politics, although the religious power regarded them as doubtful, because they introduced new rituals to Islam.
