Description

Built during the Ottomans in the 19th Century, after the Mariamite church in Damascus where the Orthodox Patriarchate is still located. It is located in the Christian area of Tripoli known as Al Kanaes St /The Churches St and close to the Dabbagha (Place to clean, prepare and export the animal skins). The Church has a beautiful refined Iconostasus with valuable Icons dating from the 18th and 19th Centuries. The church mixes many different features  that go back to the Syriac legacy, the Byzantine and Crusaders and the Ottoman style as well with the stripes of colored stones. With 2 side entrances, the church reserves the second floor for women and like most of the architectural structures, it has an inscription with full details of its construction. Inside the church the impressive wooden chairs are reserved to the Consuls of the Russian and the Greeks. Finally the wooden iconostas was replaced by a marbled one that came from  Italy. It is known that the young men lined up for 4 km from the port to pass by hand the marble piece by piece to the church.
