LIONS TOWER/AL MINA
Description
Built under the reign of Prince Barsbay al-Nasiri, who was appointed to liberate Tripoli from the Crusaders. It is the most famous tower of Tripoli (port), a cube-shaped structure of polished stone, consists of two floors. On the first upper floor is a small mosque with a mihrab, two windows, and an upper skylight. Burj Sebaa or Barsbay is considered one of the most important Islamic monuments on the coast of Tripoli, and the most beautiful example of military architecture, with its various architectural and decorative elements, all distributed in a harmonious rhythm and design.
The entrance gate, typical of Mamluk style, alternates white and black stones, on different layers.
An internal staircase leads to the upper floor of a spacious hall with eight deep hollows in walls, and the tower harmoniously incorporates diverse architectural and decorative elements. The tower is often used as an archaeological heritage site for public ceremonial events, exhibitions and concert hall.
On the top of the entrance gate there were an inscription with the symbol of the ruler, but it is said that the French General of Tripoli took it out to France.
Some scholars mention that 2 lions were there at the entrance gate. That what explains the Arabic names of the tower known as the Lions Tower. Knowing that the Lion was the symbol of Baibars considered as a heroe who organized many operations against the crusaders.
